→ appearance | Perhaps Sabaku no Gaara’s most defining attribute is the kanji for the word ‘love’ that is scarred into his forehead above his left eye. That is the trait that has most often been used to identify him, so much so that the letter itself has become synonymous with his person. He also sports dark rings around his eyes, everlasting reminders of the beast that used to reside within him. His he has light, penetrating, teal eyes and no eyebrows, a trait which is strange in and of itself. His red hair generally lies messy and unkempt. Gaara stands at 5 feet, 6 inches tall. His body is as fit as one would expect of a shinobi.

Ultimate Defense- Gaara’s sand defense has been referred to as an “ultimate defense” due to its ability to act independent of Gaara’s will.
Ability to attack and Defend Simultaneously- Gaara’s ultimate defense allows him to multitask. Knowing that the sand will protect him automatically allows him to focus on attacking his target(s).
Compassion- After his battle with Naruto, Gaara began to understand what it mean to care for people. From there, his compassion only grew.

Gaara is a man with a tortured past. As such, his personality is far from normal. His father labeled him as a monster, and his village compatriots shunned. This fractured his already fragile childhood psyche. He lusted for blood and death, and killed on a whim. However, after meeting a young Genin named Uzumaki Naruto, his whole worldview changed. He began to understand that the reason for his existence was not to kill, but to save. He began working in a standard three-man unit, learning how to work in a team. Soon after, he began to take more responsibility for his actions. After rising to the rank of Kazekage, he found himself responsible for an entire village, a responsibility that he took very seriously.
However, when he was stripped of that rank after Sunagakure fell, a dark swirl of pain and vengeance started to fester within him. He had been responsible for the safety of those in Sunagakure. And despite his best efforts, he had failed in that responsibility. Countless people were dead because he wasn’t strong enough to defend them. For all the power at his disposal, he still had limits. And those limits were made clear to him. He holds a violent hatred of those who attacked his village, a feeling bordering on obsession. He would not hesitate to kill or torture anyone involved with them in order to gain information needed to achieve his goal most dear: the reclamation of Sunagakure.

Before he was born, Gaara's father had the One-Tailed Shukaku, a tailed beast, sealed into his body while Gaara was still in his mother's womb, giving him the power to manipulate sand. The Fourth Kazekage, Gaara's father and the leader of the village of Sunagakure, intended to use Gaara as the village's personal weapon. Gaara was trained by his father throughout his childhood to help gain control over the abilities granted to him by Shukaku. Despite this, Gaara was ostracized by the Sunagakure villagers, who viewed him as a monster for being the host of a tailed beast. Shukaku would occasionally manipulate sand against Gaara's will to harm other villagers, cementing their perception of him. These attacks on the villagers convinced Gaara's father that he was a failed experiment, and he ordered Gaara's assassination. All of the attempts on Gaara's life failed, as Shukaku would always protect Gaara from harm and kill the assassin. Realizing that he had been abandoned by his family, Gaara adopted the belief that he could only rely upon himself and Shukaku, and that he had to kill others in order to confirm the value of his own existence.
He is eventually sent to Konohagakure, a rival ninja village, to take part in the Chunin Exams, twice-a-year ninja exams for ninja that wish to increase their rank. In truth, he is sent in order to infiltrate Konohagakure in preparation for an invasion by Sunagakure and its ally, Otogakure. During the exams, however, he is injured by Sasuke Uchiha, and is unable to participate in the invasion. The invasion proceeds without him and Gaara flees Konohagakure, but is pursued and defeated by Naruto Uzumaki on the village's outskirts. Sunagakure is defeated in Gaara's absence and the two villages sign a peace treaty to end the fighting. Later, Sunagakure sends Gaara to help in preventing Sasuke from defecting to Otogakure, which becomes a mutual enemy of both Konohagakure and Sunagakure. While he is able to help protect Konohagakure's ninja from Otogakure's forces, he is unable to prevent Sasuke from escaping.
Two and a half years after the failed attempt to retrieve Sasuke, Deidara, a member of the criminal organization Akatsuki, is sent to Sunagakure to capture Gaara, now the Kazekage. Deidara manages to capture Gaara by threatening Sunagakure, and the members of Akatsuki extract Shukaku from his body. Gaara dies in the process, but is revived by Chiyo, an elderly Sunagakure ninja, who gives him her life so that he can continue to protect Sunagakure.
After he was revived, Gaara went back to serving the village as Kage. When the gangs first started to spring up, Gaara kept close watch, knowing that Suna’s relative weakness would make them an easy first target. And unfortunately, he was right. The forces of Fumetsuhi attacked the village with overwhelming strength, so much so that even Gaara himself could not keep pace with their overwhelming numbers. Exhausted and out of chakra, he was sedated and taken prisoner as his village burned. He was transferred to a high security prison within Hi no Kuni, where he is kept under almost constant sedation. Should he ever wake, he would unleash a painful vengeance on those who were responsible for his fall.

He had taken that route more times than he could count. It was burned into his mind as clear as any of his most basic jutsus. But, as happens to many a Kage, he became too predictable. And when one becomes predictable, they become a target. Even someone as powerful as Sabaku no Gaara, Godaime Kazekage of Sunagakure, was vulnerable to predictability. His constitutional was like all the others, a peaceful jaunt through the forests on the border of Fire Country. The only person he had ever come into contact with on those trips was Ryoko, and he was sure that she was back in Suna. But he had been caught off guard, caught in a Jutsu that seemed to be created specifically to trap him. He had been encased in a bubble of water, so much so that his chakra infused sand was rendered damp and almost useless. Trapped within the water sphere, he eventually passed out due to the lack of oxygen. That was all he remembered of his capture.
He had stopped counting the days of his imprisonment after the first month, and now no longer knew what time of the year it was. All he knew was the inside of his watery prison. He was stuck in a tank, with a special mechanical device feeding him air. When they needed to take him out of the tank, they turned the air supply off until he blacked out. But although all hope seemed lost, he knew that he would not die here. That was not his destiny.
And that fact re-assured him, as he knew that when he escaped, he would wreak havoc on those that had wronged him, those who had kidnapped him without honor. There would be a reckoning then, where he would quench the thirst that was the sole occupant of his thoughts. When he was finished, there would be nothing left of this place.
Through the glass of his liquid enclosure, he could see shadows milling about, monitoring his life signs. Some were even staring right at him, grim, confident smirks lining their faces. The motionless Kazekage knew they were there, gawking at him like he was an animal in a zoo. So he snapped his eyes open, and mouthed one word at the men looking at him.
Vengeance.
Gaara had slipped back into a watery slumber before he sensed a commotion occurring outside his tank. There was only one thing that could possibly be happening, and Gaara's lips curved into a sadistic smile at the thought. He was going to be free, and soon all those who had dared to cross him would feel his wrath. Stories would be told of how he loosed the self-imposed shackles on his power, and unleashed the true beast within him. Those who tried to hold him captive would pay the ultimate price.
When he finally opened his eyes, he saw two familiar gold discs staring right back at him. His eyes widened as he realized who was staring through the glass. Ryoko. The one woman who challenged his long held beliefs on life...and love. She had come back for him. He saw her raise her arm and strike the glass with one of her fans, watching it crack and then burst under the pressure of the gallons of water it was forced to hold back. He fell forward, right into the arms of of pale missing-nin. He grabbed at the breathing mask, pulling it off, coughing out the water that invaded his lungs. He was wearing a non-descript pair of trouser, but wore no other clothing. Everything he had been captured in had been confiscated. But no matter...he was free.
Still held in Ryoko's embrace, he raised his head, allowing his eyes to focus. His gaze met Ryoko's and he communicated his silent thanks to her. But after that, his eyes hardened. Slowly and surely extricating himself from Ryoko, he got to his feet and stood at his full height. Stray sand particles started to form around his person, until he was surrounded by a whirling vortex of hardened sand. The time was at hand. He spoke in a calm tone, his voice forceful, yet promoting the authority that was bestowed upon him.
"Do not harm any of the enemy. They...are...mine."
