It was almost exactly as he'd left it. Beautiful, yet ever somber, the Village Hidden in the Rain stood free as ever from Kurai's taint, protected from their influence by the efforts of its rulers since the earliest days of the organization's existence. He'd assumed that he could step away for a time and leave the village in the hands of his loyal shinobi forces, but if he'd heard correctly, they had either dropped the ball or lost faith in their god. Whispers of a new individual standing as ruler over his village had reached his ears; one backed by that collection of fools who had seen fit to steal the name made respectable by the efforts of Yahiko, Konan, and himself. Their sin was great enough without their intrusion, but their interference in Amegakure's affairs had given him a much more personal reason to despise this new Akatsuki.
That said, they were still in his village, and he didn't particularly care to engage them if he didn't really have to lest his precious buildings suffer the worst from the encounter; he wouldn't underestimate the power of this new Akatsuki's members, and if there happened to be more than one of them present, it might take a rather destructive display of power for him to put them down. Rebuilding the village afterwards wouldn't likely be excessively difficult, but these were a people who were just about to get their missing god back. He didn't want to put them to work at hard labor right away.
These were things best considered later, however, as the time was coming for the fateful confrontation. Nagato flew above boundaries of Amegakure atop his bird summon, forging a single hand sign as they went. It was always easiest to perform this technique in his home village, where there were always storm clouds in abundance. After several moments, a heavy rain began to fall upon the village, and every chakra it touched became known to him. It had been too long since he'd felt these energies resonate with his own, but he still recognized them even after all that time. If the invaders were still present in his village, they must be indoors where his rain couldn't reach them. He was going to have to send in a scout to ferret them out.
Another hand sign forged, and he had a double to fulfill that purpose. It dropped into the village in his place, touching down upon a high rooftop and descending from there as the rain soaked its hair and clothes. Villagers scuttled this way and that, most of them barely paying any attention to it. Not surprising; this wasn't the face that they were accustomed to seeing in their god, but Nagato had faith that they would recognize his eyes and his power. His double settled on one of the lower rooftops to gaze down on the people below, and in a loud voice, it called out to any who could hear it.
"God has returned to Amegakure this day. Who challenges my right to reign?"
It would wait patiently for the reply.
