"Dying like trash...never ending hatred...pain that never heals...that is war..."
[/i] - of the three great dojutsu, his is the greatest
→ appearance | A descendant of the infamous Uzumaki Clan, Nagato possesses the telltale strawberry red hair most common among those who bear Uzumaki blood. Straight and thick, he keeps it neck-length at most times and styled such that his ample bangs often cover one of his eyes. Said eyes are mostly gray in color with a ripple pattern--the mark of the legendary Rinnegan. He stands tall at six feet and weighs 185 pounds, a great improvement over his previously-frail state of existence. His skin has regained much of the color lost to years spent sheltered and protected in a large mobile seat, but he is still relatively pale overall.
→ proper equipment | He dresses fairly simply for one who calls himself a god, largely because he is a very active deity. Most easily seen is the black cloak with red clouds sewn into it, a garment he has retained since his days with Akatsuki due to the history it represents. Beneath that are a set of blue-gray garments--a mesh armor shirt and a pair of standard shinobi trousers. He wears white socks and black sandals, and the symbol of his allegiance to the village he still calls home remains securely upon his forehead at all hours of the day.
→ identifiers | You'll find no one else in all the world with eyes like Nagato's (unless you count the corpses he has under his control). Other than the Rinnegan and his striking red hair, his most unique features are the circular scars on his back: holdovers from the time he spent relying exclusively on the Six Paths of Pain to handle his business.
→ inventory |
→ strengths |
chakra - incredibly potent and nearly limitless
six paths of pain - any fight against him is potentially seven against one
determination - he never, never surrenders
charisma - the members of the original Akatsuki could not likely have been controlled as a unit by anyone else[/ul]
→ weaknesses |
genjutsu - sound-based illusions can sometimes overcome him
caution - he rarely checks to see if his victims are actually dead
stubborn - sometimes, surrendering might be the wiser choice
arrogant - he calls himself a god. 'nuff said.[/ul]
→ personality | He used to be a very kind person, but the man he was died with Yahiko. Nagato, who now prefers the appellation "Pain" when addressed by anyone other than Konan, has developed into a rather cold individual with a very advanced god complex. Well-acquainted with suffering born of human folly, he believes wholeheartedly that the things he's gone through have elevated his consciousness to a level above mortality, and he is certain that it is his destiny to guide the rest of mankind to the very same understanding. Though his experiences in recent years have caused him to falter somewhat, his faith in his own ideals has not been shaken, and he is still committed to the idea of leading the world to peace through pain.
In spite of his cruel disregard for the lives and desires of those who stand against him, Nagato is actually rather polite in general. He is generally respectful those who prove themselves powerful, wise, or somehow useful, reserving his scorn for the fools who live in the ignorance from which he has arisen. When he fights, he is not excessively brutal due to a belief that every death (more so than every life) is significant. For the sake of those left behind, he tries to leave corpses intact so that the deceased may receive a proper burial in due time, and he generally says a few words for his victims and fallen comrades. He is offended by the presence of people who display savage or unrefined behavior, and if the circumstances are right, he may even be inclined to punish such individuals for their insolence. After all, it is not right that something impure should enter into the presence of a god.
Calm and aloof, there are few things that can get a real emotional reaction out of the would-be deity these days. His anger is reserved for those who assume that their pain is in any way equal to his own without any evidence to back it up; such an assertion belittles his experiences and calls his divinity into question, and the fact that he has trouble letting go of the things he has lost only makes the topic all the more sensitive. He feels sorrow more often than he feels anything else, especially for the innocent jinchuuriki who must die so that his plan can succeed, but his sorrow rarely shows in anything aside from the words he speaks (which is almost funny given his former status as a "crybaby"). It is nearly impossible to get a smile out of him given his dedication to the power of pain, but in certain circumstances, he may be inclined to give a little smirk. These days, he usually only does that when he's mocking someone.
Ultimately, he considers himself a benevolent individual whose actions are purely for the good of future generations. Those under his influence are generally happy to serve him for all the good he promises to do in their lives, and those against him cannot deny that he is at least a humane foe compared to those such as Orochimaru and the Kurai leader, who are driven solely by a desire for power. Nagato has seen a lot of evil in his life, and he is completely dedicated to the goal of wiping out that evil by any means necessary. Capturing and killing most of the jinchuuriki was one of the unsavory methods he was willing to accept. Maintaining an alliance with Hozuki is yet another.[/blockquote]

"You think you're the only ones who matter. You think you can put off death. But that peace made you foolish and thoughtless. If you kill someone, someone else will kill you; this hatred binds us together."[/center]
[/i] - Produced from any part of his body, but most often from his back and hands. Surprisingly durable, these are inserted into corpses for use in the Six Paths of Pain.
→ gear | All equipment Nagato requires is produced from his own body through use of the Asura Path, making him a highly-versatile combatant. Some of the weapons he has displayed in the past:
Chakra Disruption Blades - Similar to the above, but weaponized. Nagato can control any living creature pierced by one of these extremely sharp items.
Extra Appendages - He may grow up to four extra arms and three extra faces. These are mechanical and significantly more durable than flesh and bone.
Detachable Limbs - The limbs on his mechanical arms can be fired off with enough force to break through thick bedrock.
Weapons - He can produce various kinds of blades (drills, knives, saws, etc.) from several parts of his body.
Tendrils - Only slightly less durable than the arms, these tendrils are quite effective at binding, constricting, and/or crushing whatever they ensnare.
Missiles - Can be generated from multiple points on his body. They home in on targets and produce massive explosions.
Propulsion Boots - Chakra fired from the soles of his feet allow him to move about at very high speeds.
Chakra Cannon - A cannon produced from the head or the arm. It produces a massive blast of chakra.[/ul]
→ fighting style | Always seeking to end any conflict he finds himself in as quickly as possible, Nagato is a very aggressive combatant. Since he doesn't generally need to worry about conserving chakra, he is able to pull out techniques of great power from the very start of the battle and continue to belt them out for its entire duration. He specializes in ninjutsu and mostly uses those which are unique to him as the inheritor of the Rinnegan, mixing them together in quick succession to produce deadly combinations and dominate his foes. Though he can learn and master literally any technique with ease, he most frequently uses the Six Paths of Pain techniques, which grant him a significant level of versatility and unpredictability. With short-range, long-range, and mid-range attacks (all of great power) in addition to prodigious taijutsu talent, there is almost no way to escape from Nagato once an engagement with him has begun. That said, he prefers to fight from at least some distance and makes use of his gravity-based jutsu, numerous summons, and Asura Path projectiles to engage his enemy from afar.
→ elemental nature | All elemental natures in addition to yin and yang.
→ chakra control level | Very Fine; though he could easily get by on the potency and amount of his chakra alone, Nagato's great proficiency with fuinjutsu is proof of his exceptional control over his chakra
→ kekkei genkai | Rinnegan [Samsara Eye]
→ kg mastery level | The mysteries of the Rinnegan are nearly infinite, and Nagato has spent the better part of his life exploring them. Even so, he still has not reached the full potential of its power, but he believes that he is quite close.

→ friends | [Konan | 44 | Hozuki Supporter]
→ history | Born to a humble couple in a small village near Amegakure no Sato, the boy who would one day call himself a god came from a rather humble background. His parents were simple folk: his father a poor farmer, and his mother a wayward member of a dead clan. When the blessing of a child came forth into their lives, they worked hard to make ends meet, but with the constant threat of conflict and the frequent raids by unsavory shinobi in need of supplies, more than a few nights passed during which the family had to go hungry. That hardly every mattered to young Nagato, though; so long as he had his parents and a simple roof over his head, there was nothing that could put a damper on his innocent smile for very long.
That all changed when a large-scale war finally broke out among the nations surrounding their own, and the lands around Amegakure made for a most convenient battleground. The family of three frequently had to hide themselves to avoid getting caught in the crossfire of the war they had no stake in. During these times, Nagato came to know fear, but his parents did their best to reassure him that they would keep him safe no matter what. They proved their dedication to that promise after a pair of Konoha shinobi broke into their home. Acting to preserve the safety of their home, Nagato's mother and father attacked, and the ninja put an end to their lives in self-defense. Great remorse filled them immediately after the deed was done, but Nagato could not see that. His vision grew blurry and red as instinct took over, and filled with a power not seen in centuries, he violently murdered the pair that had made him an orphan, never forgetting the symbol that they wore upon their foreheads.
When he regained his senses, he buried his parents and left his home to wander the country alone, searching hopelessly for resources that would help him survive. He collected three friends during his travels: Chibi, a starving puppy; Konan, a pretty little origami artist; and Yahiko, a spirited child with a powerful hatred for war. All three of them were orphans like him, having lost their families to the violence of war, and they resolved to stick together in order to increase their chances of survival. While the three children did manage to survive the war together, Chibi was killed in the crossfire of a battle between Amegakure's leader, Salamander Hanzo, and a squad of Konoha shinobi. It was as they mourned the little dog's death that Yahiko swore to become a god and use his power and position as such to eliminate war from the world. It was a goal that Nagato would come to inherit as he and Yahiko grew closer as friends.
The orphans began to search for ninja after that, spurred on by Yahiko's desire to receive training as a ninja in order to bring about his dream of becoming God. They managed to find the trio that would come to be known as the Legendary Sannin, whose fight with Hanzo had led to Chibi's death. Reminded of the shinobi who had killed his parents, Nagato was unable to accept Jiraiya, the only one to stay with the orphans, into his life, let alone his heart; however, when he reactivated the power of his Rinnegan in an effort to save Yahiko from a rogue ninja, Jiraiya's reverence for that legendary dojutsu led him to take the training of the orphans much more seriously. In particularly, he dedicated a lot of time to helping Nagato develop his ideology. They had a number of discussions about the answer to the question of how to find peace, but the red-haired child ultimately decided that his answer was to protect his friends no matter how much pain that goal might cause.
When they had grown strong enough to defend themselves, Jiraiya left them, and the orphans moved into Amegakure to become ninja there. Yahiko began to spread his ideas of non-violent ways to bring about peace, and in that village filled with war refugees and ninja weary of constant wars, his revolutionary ideas began to gain traction. They gathered these followers into an organization known as Akatsuki, and with some assistance from a mysterious benefactor in a curious mask, they quickly became famous. In time, Hanzo decided that he could ignore the organization no longer, and he summoned them with a promise of making use of their power and ideals to engage Suna, Iwa, and Konoha in peaceful negotiations. This proved to be a trap; Hanzo captured Konan and held her hostage, demanding that Nagato kill Yahiko in exchange for her freedom. Filled with sorrow and uncertainty, he found himself unable to act, but Yahiko decided for him and threw himself onto the kunai he held in his hand. A few moments later, Konan had lost the love of her life, and Nagato, his best friend.
Thinking back to Yahiko's decades-old promise to become a god, Nagato decided in the following moments that everything he'd believed in up to that point had been a lie. There could be no negotiations, no concessions, no compromise; the path to peace was paved with pain, and only pain could bring the world to any form of peace. With that in mind, he proceeded to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and brutally massacre the assembled forces. Only Danzo and Hanzo managed to escape his wrath, though the latter would not go free for long. Weakened by his assault and disillusioned by the ordeal that inspired it, Nagato abandoned his allegiance to his previous ideals and went on the warpath. Hanzo was the first victim of the newly-christened Pain, who defeated the match of the Legendary Sannin with incredible ease. He was followed soon after by the many people who had supported or associated with him in the past. Freed of their influence, Amegakure fell under Pain's control, and its people came to revere him as a god within a few short years of his takeover.
Though Amegakure was his prime concern, Pain was still dedicated to the cause of fulfilling his destiny by bringing about the peace he so desired. To that end, he developed a plan: acquire the nine tailed beasts, whose power he could use to forge a weapon of incredible might. It would be a weapon so fearsome that its use would discourage all conflict, securing a stable peace for at least the decades or centuries it would take for people to grow bold and violent enough to use the weapon once again. A cycle of peace brought about through pain was his goal, and the same benefactor who'd helped Akatsuki rise to fame assisted him in gathering shinobi who would be helpful to his cause. While Uchiha Madara faded into the shadows to keep an eye on things in secret, Pain led the Akatsuki in all of its incarnations, promising power, wealth, and influence to any who could assist him in his goals. Only the most powerful shinobi were fully accepted into the organizations ranks, and before long, their name was feared throughout all of the shinobi lands.
That all changed when a catastrophic miscalculation led to the destruction of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and the release of all the tailed beasts contained within. Motivated by various causes, Akatsuki's members abandoned the organization thereafter, leaving Pain, Konan, and Madara as its sole remaining members. Having come to yet another crossroads, the inheritor of the Rinnegan opted to abandon his benefactor and withdraw into Amegakure with Konan, who helped him as he began the arduous process of regaining his independence from the machine that had been his only source of mobility for so long. He emerged fit and healthy to find that the world outside of his village had become corrupted by the influence of a powerful gang that threatened to turn the entire shinobi system on its head, a change that would surely result in hostilities more intense than any he'd had to suffer through in his lifetime. No matter what it took, he would not allow that to happen.
Nagato pursued and secured a truce with Hozuki, agreeing to provide them safe haven within the walls of Amegakure so long as they remained dedicated to the cause of eliminating Kurai from the rest of the world. For his part, he began to travel the nations in much the same way as his predecessor, spreading the Gospel of Pain and attempting to draw greater numbers to support his plan for peace. Only recently has it become apparent that an organization claiming the name of that made famous by his own efforts and those of his two dearest friends has taken his absence as an opportunity to move in and claim the village he has worked so hard to keep pure. With Hozuki in disarray after the vicious assault by Kurai forces, the new Sage has decided that he will have to step forward and take certain matters into his own hands...

→ rp sample |Carried on the back of his drill-beaked bird, Nagato soared high above the clouds on his way to the home he'd come to cherish. Word had reached him that a rather unsavory presence had come to dwell there in his absence. Saving the world was of course the most important thing on his to-do list, but even he who considered himself a god had to admit that he couldn't do it all by himself in his current state. Hozuki supported him, and he supported the idealistic organization in turn. He wasn't just moving in to reclaim his dominion over his home; he was moving in to reclaim the only safe place left for those who stood against Kurai.
It was difficult to believe how bad things had gotten, and how quickly. It had taken the Sage of the Six Paths decades to spread his doctrine and create the shinobi world, and it seemed to have taken Kurai much less time to tear it down. The thought of all they'd done in the process filled the airborne deity with disgust; the fall of the shinobi lifestyle was supposed to be a positive ideal, but that gang of miscreants had turned that dream into a nightmare by creating a world even worse than the war-torn societies left in the wake of the Five Great Shinobi Nations. Frankly, he hadn't considered that such a hell was even possible, but he was once again surprised by the savagery and evil mankind was capable of. There could be no doubt that this world needed him, and he was going to be there for it.
He was going to begin by proving that no one could take something that was rightfully his, a truth that would become apparent when he tore his village free from the jaws of evil. He clenched his fists in anticipation of the struggle that was likely ahead of him, wondering for an instant if it would have been wiser to request the assistance of Uzumaki Naruto. Alas, he had the pride of a deity if not all of the power, and he would not let history record the name of another beside his own. When legends spoke of the retaking of Amegakure by the omnipresent god who called that place home, only the name of Pain would lie upon the lips and pages that would forever tell the tale.
"The hour is at hand..."
His home was within sight...
