"Growth occurs when one goes beyond one's limits. Realising that is also part of training." Uchiha Itachi, age 7
→ appearance | Itachi is not exactly well-built. In fact putting it nicely, he is what some would consider slender. As an Uchiha he is pale-skinned, almost sickly looking, with black thickly-lashed eyes and inheriting the dark hair of his mother. Under his eyes and to the sides of his nose, Itachi has long ridge lines that are prominent, a key part of his father's genetics. Itachi is around average height at 5'10" tall, but factoring in the height of both parents, he is quite lucky. His hair is relatively long, falling down to his shoulders, but is tied up at the back, allowing the bangs at the sides of his face to fall gracefully.
→ proper equipment | Itachi's attire has changed since his days in the Akatsuki. He is no longer adorned in the old robes and instead can be found wearing a dark cloak with a hood over the top of his normal clothing. He wears a v-neck shirt with a netted undershirt and a white sash belt. His trousers are the same style loose fit dark greyish blue as before, and his boots are modelled after the earliers ones as well.
→ identifiers | His most identifying feature would be his Sharingan. During these harsh times Itachi feels the need to always be on alert, and therefore his shimmering red bloodline ability makes itself obvious to unwanted company, and allows him a fierce edge in battle. His tear troughs are also quite trademark, attributed to his father.
→ inventory | Kunai, explosive tags, shuriken, strong wiring, bandages, grappling hook.
→ strengths | Itachi has many strengths, one of them being the total understanding of his bloodline. His deadly precision with a kunai is better augmented by the use of his Sharingan, and makes it almost impossible for him to miss. The Sharingan he wields so effortlessly comes with an assortment of powers, most of them named after the gods of mythology. He is very proficient in the use of Katon techniques, changing the tide of battle even when they are used outside of their most practical range. Itachi is one of the most skilled Genjutsu users, with even one glimpse into his eyes triggering a brutal Genjutsu technique. Some find safety in looking away from his eyes, but are often brought to his finger Genjutsu. He is a lethal Taijutsu user, mainly adapting a unique style of defensive fighting but using his other techniques to distract his opposition whilst closing in on them. Against Kakashi, Itachi managed to get the advantage even when fighting against the element of surprise, positioning him in a headlock. In a battle of smarts, Itachi is calm whilst analysing the situation perfectly, he is not usually out-smarted and has been acknowledged as a prodigy and a genius many times.
→ weaknesses | Though Itachi is capable of using many of his Mangekyou Sharingan techniques, it pains him to do so as his stamina has a limit. This accompanied by the inevitably of his failing eyes forces him to use his Doujutsu techniques sparingly. This points to him not being best-suited for long drawn out battles or fights against many opponents. Another weakness is showing emotion, believing that in many situations this could bring about the loss of a loved one, or allow him to be baited in combat by his enemies. He sometimes attempts to fix things alone and usually ends up making things worse.
→ personality | In his days as an agent of the evil force known as Akatsuki, Itachi was seen as a quiet but tainted individual. His intentions were shrouded in mystery, and even the more involved members of the organisation could not clearly see through his facade. As a member of this organisation, Itachi was put into the position of surrounding himself with the delirious murderers that it consisted of. Though he did not really think about his time in Akatsuki, Itachi learned of the philosophy that some of them followed: Kisame's "nindo" as an example was to protect information, as he viewed it as more important than the life of an individual. Itachi was said to be ruthless, which because it was said by Kisame the brutal murderer demon shark, said a lot about his reputation. Although the Itachi that was seen there was anything but the real Itachi...
Even in his childhood Itachi was not spared the harsh and cruel reality of the shinobi world. The war around him impacted him greater than anybody realised, making him a pacifist who would do anything to free his village of the turmoil that engulfed it. Despite this state of mind, Itachi was forged into a weapon of war somewhat for the country that he loved dearly, becoming a Chunin at 10 and then ANBU Captain at 13. It was revealed that the Uchiha were planning a coup d’etat, and the family he held so close to his heart were becoming a threat to the village he prided himself a citizen of. Around this time, Itachi's younger brother Sasuke was growing into an ambitious shinobi, wanting to surpass his older brother who had already become a child prodigy. Itachi cared for Sasuke, making sure his father attended his induction into the Academy, and telling him that he would always be there for him, even as an obstacle for him to overcome.
Not long after, Itachi slaughtered his clan. Killing every one of them except for Sasuke. All for the sake of peace and for the safety of his young brother, accepting dishonour in payment for honour, and hatred in payment for love. The brother he wanted nothing more than to love now hated him, and in order to make the village see his brother as a hero, Itachi initiated Sasuke's quest for power in which he had hoped would eventually lead to his death and the redemption of his clan. This was Itachi's true nature: a loving and caring individual a victim of circumstance and a man faced with the task of betraying his own family and village, the worst deed a shinobi could commit.

"Being skilled isn't all that's it's made out to be. When you're strong, you become arrogant and withdrawn. Even if what you sought after was your dream." Uchiha Itachi, age 13

→ gear | Small crumpled picture of his family
→ fighting style | Itachi's precognitive abilities with Sharingan allow him to gain the upper hand in Taijutsu, even against well-versed practitioners. Though his primary means of fighting with Taijutsu are defensive, he has been known to take the offensive front.
With his Ninjutsu, Itachi can fight long range with use of his Katon techniques. Though these techniques are used offensively, he sometimes uses them to force his enemy into a position he can take advantage of.
Going with the offensive style fighting Itachi can transition to, a lot of the most powerful techniques in his arsenal are his Doujutsu. With the Mangekyou Sharingan, Itachi can use Amateratsu to burn through anything in the way of his targets and will follow them with blinding speed. He also uses Tsukuyomi which renders the victim immobile and puts them into a spiritual world which can last for days but in reality, pass as mere seconds. Lastly, Susano'o can fulfill both roles, the Sword of Totsuka which seals someone away forever and the outer body of Susano'o which is a guardian incapable of being penetrated.
Not mentioning his use of clones, finger genjutsu, seal speed, and ability to assess almost any situation peacefully, Itachi is versatile both offensively and defensively.

→ history | Itachi's story is one of betrayal, hardship and tragedy. Brought into the world by Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha, Itachi was already destined to be a great ninja, with his father being chief of the police force. As he grew though, it became very obvious very quickly that Itachi was no ordinary shinobi. His display of talent during solo kunai training shocked and frustrated Orochimaru, who marvelled at Itachi's prowess so early with his bloodline limit Sharingan.
His training paid off later, becoming Chunin at 10 and ANBU Leader at only 13 years old. His genius benefited the ANBU greatly, allowing them to complete many missions. Itachi's father very rarely praised him, but instead set high expectations for him, and even higher expectations for his younger brother Sasuke. Sasuke saw Itachi as an obstacle to overcome, constantly begging and pleading him to train, mostly for the recognition of his parents. Itachi would always poke Sasuke on the head, apologising and suggesting that he would at some other time, though he truly never did.
The constant pressures of training and living under the command of Konoha's high authorities were beginning to strain Itachi's relationship with Sasuke, and it was starting to show. Itachi's close friend Shisui was found dead with a suicide note, but due to the mysterious nature of the note, Itachi's innocence was brought into question. This irritated Itachi, making him stand up for himself and in turn question the beliefs and methods that the clan were using at the time.
Shortly after, Madara and Itachi had a brief meeting where Itachi agreed to slaughter his clan to prevent the war that Madara so passionately wanted to reignite, under the condition that Sasuke remained unharmed. This assured him that Sasuke would live on and may eventually restore faith in the Uchiha. The Third Hokage at the time also agreed to Itachi's methods, but Itachi asked that Sasuke was not to be punished for his clan's actions. He threatened Danzou saying that if Sasuke's life was ever in danger because of this arrangement that he would leak information about Konoha to rival nations, and so it began.
One night, accompanied by Uchiha Madara, Itachi laid waste to the whole compound, slaughtering everyone except Sasuke. His excuse was to test his capacity, but that was far from the truth. He told Sasuke to come before him when he had the same eyes as him, and shared with him the knowledge and location of a secret scroll that held information regarding the Uchiha's forsaken powers. Shedding a tear, he watched as Sasuke fainted and he left to seek purpose elsewhere.
It was during this time Itachi joined Akatsuki, though his ambition was to act as a spy, gaining information on Akatsuki's goals and making sure Sasuke was still safe. Around this period, the legendary Sannin Orochimaru approached Itachi with the intention of stealing his eyes. Itachi paralysed him with a genjutsu and severed his arm casually. Deidara also joined shortly after, and it was Itachi that tested his usefulness. He caught the young shinobi in a genjutsu, almost assisting him in suicide before Deidara realised his mistake.
Kisame and Itachi were tasked with retrieving Naruto, so that the demon-fox could be gathered with the other tailed-beasts. He used this as an opportunity to monitor Sasuke's progression, and reminded him that he did not have enough power to kill him yet. After escaping from Konoha with Kisame, Itachi was safe in the knowledge that Konohagakure was still intact and that his beloved brother had not been punished.
Many years later, Itachi returned to battle against Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi as a body-double so he could buy enough time for the Akatsuki to extract Gaara's tailed-beast. He assessed Naruto's capability and concluded that Naruto's progress was indeed swift.
Finally, it was time for him to come face to face with his sibling Sasuke. In the old Uchiha hideout Itachi waited, seated in the Uchiha "cathedra" as fate closed in on his location. The intensity of their relationship or lack thereof had escalated over the years, and Sasuke had risen in strength, mastering the basic form of the Sharingan. The two fought, many of the battles taking place in Itachi's genjutsu realm. Orochimaru's presence in his brother allowed him access to cellular regeneration abilities and offensive techniques that Itachi had a difficult time competing with, but they tied near the end of the engagement. Susano'o protected Itachi from Sasuke's devastating Kirin technique, which forked destructive rays of lightning down from the sky. Sasuke was left at his older brother's mercy, but as illness struck, Itachi took his last step, trailing blood across his brother's forehead as he collapsed at his feet.
After Sasuke left, Itachi's body was recovered by Zetsu and Kisame, who passed him onto a medical expert. Somehow, he was revived through the power of medical jutsu, and although his ties with Akatsuki were broken, he roamed the land of the living once more.
Much to his surprise, Itachi encountered Haruno Sakura, who explained the situation that had now consumed the shinobi world. A gang who had claimed power over the territories that previously belonged to their respective nations, a gang with a plan equally as mysterious and gloomy as Akatsuki, had risen in his absence. Sakura was leading the resistance, and Itachi therefore volunteered to lend himself to the efforts of this rebellion.
When they arrived at the Hozuki camp, Itachi settled in nicely and quickly earned the faith of the resistance members, though it was not easy. With her incredible and seemingly unmatched prowess in the medical field, Sakura relaxed a good portion of Itachi's stubborn ailment, though it would regress back to its former state from time to time. His blindness was also slowly diminishing with her cell regeneration technique, though like his illness it refused to go away completely. The two became closer, and their relationship soon blossomed into something more.
Hozuki formed an alliance with Nagato and Konan, who were former members of Akatsuki similar to him. Things were looking up for the resistance, with the Uchiha becoming a commander, directing his forces in the many advances they made to take back their seized home village. He would hold the garrison whenever Sakura had to be elsewhere and regularly lead patrols around their headquarters. The two felt confident enough to discuss their future as a couple, even the prospect of having children.
Itachi was sent by Hozuki to seek out sources of authority that managed this new power, and to try and break them from within through infiltrating their forces.
His mission lasted longer than he expected, but he accomplished something he never thought possible: a cure to the disease that had been plaguing him for years on end. The drugs that were manufactured provided him permanent resolution, but unfortunately he found out that the gang that had taken his home village were the creators of this drug. He destroyed any evidence of these drugs, and disrupted trade routes into Konoha for many months. His cover was blown when they realised he had infiltrated them but he escaped before they could capture him. He then heard of Sakura's capture, and feared for the life of his former lover. He decided it was time to rally efforts and attempt a rescue, but not knowing if they would accept him after supposedly abandoning them for so long.

"People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "reality". But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true"? Merely vague concepts… their "reality" may all be a mirage. Can we consider them to simply be living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?" Uchiha Itachi, age 21

→ rp sample |Bouncing from branch to branch, he remained quiet in contemplation, knitting his brows. Looking forward at the end of the long forest route, Uchiha Itachi knew exactly what the beaming light at the end of the forest represented, and hoped this campaign would end quickly before it seriously escalated. His part in all of this was still unknown, but at the moment it was obvious they needed any help they could get. It was ambitious perhaps, but moreso foolish to think this would end any time soon. Now that Sakura had been captured, Naruto or another resistance member would have to pick up the pieces, that is if they hadn't all been captured as well. The guilt was almost palpable, but he would need to remain calm to be able to adapt now. What good would he be without a stable perspective on things?
The soles of his boots landed on the crisp grass as he looked up into the sky, it was afternoon. The eroded dirt walkway ahead of him was the only way for him to get anywhere near Konoha's borders. They had surveillance around the edges though, so if he was to venture any closer they would most certainly pick him up. He had worked out the shift patterns of various members of this organisation that were guarding the outside post before, and only by assuming the identity of one of them was he able to pass the perimeter, but their regulations were sure to have changed now. It was a very difficult thing to do, speaking to them was like something he had never experienced before. At least in Akatsuki they had their own personalities; these men had nothing of the sort, and were drugged up to their eyeballs. They were inherently evil, and needed to be stopped before they made their next move, or at least slowed down a bit.
Itachi's eyes wandered from the blinding light above to a stream trickling through the soft bed of grass nearby. He stopped next to it, crouching and cupping both hands. He filled his shaped palms with water and splashed it over his face, taking a deep breath and feeling every second of it. His chest expanded properly as air rushed through his lungs, no longer constricted by that exasperting illness. The drug had worked wonders for him, doubling his energy levels ten-fold and increasing his overall chakra capacity. This meant he would hold out in sustained fights for much longer. It was worth the time it took to find, but was it worth losing his... ex-lover?
He straightened up now, looking out into the distance whilst frowning in resentment. Why was he always making bad decisions? Things never went his way, and he couldn't remember the last time something had actually worked out for him. He had never been one to complain, never saw himself as a "victim of the times". Instead he just... got on with it, made the most of all of his situations.
A crow landed on the grass next to him, a scout he had sent out to try and determine the seriousness of their security. It poofed into smoke and an illusion of himself appeared, looking grim and lifeless. He remained silent, waiting for the report.
“Too many,” it said simply.
Itachi looked to the right at his clone, angry with the way he looked at himself. Though he wasn't one to show emotion, the situation that he had put Sakura in was playing with his mind, increasing his already stacked up guilt. He felt the ridge of his nose curl as he snarled and with one motion he extended his arm and stabbed his clone in the face with a dagger, leaving an accumulation of vapour as it dissipated.
