HISTORY:
Nearly one hundred years ago in the land of Grass, a special clan formed a contract with the lord of Latrodectus—the widow spiders. Led by a woman named Kyoshoku Yamome, the women of this clan began to train with a certain branch of the Latrodectus family, the Black Widow spider. Only the female children of this clan were branded with two tattoos, one on the left palm (Mamori [Defence]) and one on the right (Raishuu [Attack]) to begin the special training that all Kyoshoku women endured.
When the children turn five, they are placed into groups of other girls of the same age and set to play a game of tag. The Demon, a blind girl, is the one who is "it", and catches the children in certain order. The first to be caught becomes the new Demon (she is to be blinded in a separate ceremony); the last to be caught is the child who is deemed skilled enough to be trained. The victor is stamped with the tattoos on each hand, and sent to begin training.
The first order of business was to learn how to change the elemental nature of their chakra into what they call their Dokueki [Venom] chakra, which is a special nature unique to this clan. The child must learn to control the flow of this chakra and keep in concentrated in the hands, or the tattoos—their only link to their summons—would become trapped within the user’s body, and eat their way out. More than half of the clan’s child population died this way, but if the child was smart enough they would be able to master that very important trait.
Once that aspect is complete, which it should be by the age of seven, the child then learns how to summon them. As the contract has unique properties, the insects are sealed within the actual tattoos themselves, and require no blood to be summoned. Instead they live inside the body, similar to the Aburame clan of Konoha, feeding off of the venomous chakra that the host provides. To bring forth the spiders, the user must direct chakra into the tattoos, and literally force the bugs out of their skin. The spiders are not of true form, and are instead made completely of the chakra that they feed off of; a shadow of the real thing.
They are originally the exact size of the tattoo, but the user can use more chakra to make them larger or less to make them smaller to fit the required needs. All of this skill must be accomplished by the age of twelve or the contract is retracted and the host killed. When Yamome originally bound her clan to these insects she had not known of the requirements to keep their body under complete control. The body must maintain a temperature between 35-40 degrees Celsius, no lower and no higher, or the chakra will become harder to control and begin to harm the host. The clan’s women must also keep their emotions completely in control or their chakra levels begin to fluctuate, and this could also get out of hand and kill her.
When this was originally done to the first generation of Kumohani’i bearers, it was considered cruel and unusual. Yamome fought for the rights to use this ability within her clan and keep it completely unique, but the original council of Kusagakure no Sato had a few other things to say about it. Their was an internal struggle within the village between the Kyoshoku and the council, and nearly twenty years later the council reluctantly agreed to allow this clan to reside within the walls of the village, under the condition that they work as shinobi for Kusa.
This was not a steep price, and most Kyoshoku women were heavily pressed for training and perfection so that they could serve the village they called home. Most of the men, no matter how strong they were, were no match for their female counterparts: the women were becoming more and more like the insects they controlled. The population percentage within in the clan was seventy-six percent male, twenty-three percent female. There was a high mortality rate among girls, and most did not make it past their sixth birthdays. After some time the women would take their duty and produce children, but almost immediately after they returned to work.
Nearly seventy years later, after Yamome had already died of becoming too heated in battle and losing control of her Kumohani’i, the males of the clan began to devise a plan to take over the Kyoshoku and bring the ability down on themselves. They formed a secret group within the compound of the clan, and thought up well-devised and thoroughly effective plans to divest themselves of the overzealous and pompous women. Word got out the night before the plan was to commence, and havoc reigned over the normally peaceful village. Wars were fought everywhere: in the streets, in temple, even in the town square. There was nothing that could be done to stop it.
In most cases, however, the female would get far too angry to keep excellent control of her summons, and would end up weakening and perishing of their own accord. The wars waged on for another ten years, and nearly the entire clan was wiped out by their own kin. Those who remained kept the sexist hatred towards each other, and those who survived often fled Kusagakure in fear that the other would attack and kill them. It was during this time that Kemuri was born to her mother, Kumo, and raised within the demolished walls of Kusagakure. She managed to master the Kumohani’i, but the council and Kage knew that trouble would be brewing quickly if they were allowed to continue their training within the walls.
Kumo and Kemuri were two of the last remaining members within the village, and when they were finally discovered all hell broke loose. Kumo was snatched by the shinobi of the village, and since there was no one left to help her, she was publically executed as a traitor and villain in front of the entire village. Kemuri was devastated at the loss of her mother, and was always frowned upon by her fellow citizens. By the age of ten she had grown to hate the entire populace of the village, and went on what could easily be called a rampage.
By the age of eleven she was the last known user of the Kumohani’i who had not gone into hiding or perished from age, illness or other means, and left the village of Kusa. She fled to Amegakure no Sato, the Village Hidden in the Rain, and now is the leader of the cruel, bloodstained clan that originally resided in Kusagakure. Once she dies the secret dies with her, as she never intends to pass on her knowledge to anyone else.
The tangled web of the Kyoshoku is all that remains of a once proud and prosperous clan.
