→ appearance | [ref 1] [ref 2] [ref 3]
- stature;
Mishka is on the thinner side--she's just a bit below average height at 5'2" and weighs about 107 pounds. She doesn't have any great amount of muscle mass, but the muscles she does have are conditioned enough to give her average strength despite her smaller frame.- hair;
Mishka has bubblegum pink hair that fades into a darker shade at its longer length. She keeps it somewhat long and maintains it very well--it could easily be dubbed a source of pride for her.- eyes;
Mishka has deep pink eyes. Their captivating shade adds to her beauty and complements her hair color. They are indeed windows to the soul--though her body language may convey one thing, her eyes will always say what she's really thinking or feeling.- skin tone;
Typically very pale. Even after hours in the sun her skin won't tan. It would burn, but beyond that her skin stays about the same shade, making her look as if she's never had the company of sunlight.
→ proper equipment |
- casual;
When not in combat or expecting it, Mishka wears flattering attire of a business-as-usual nature. She can often be found wearing dresses and skirts of varying lengths when she's traveling quietly among villages. She is particularly fond of the color white, and occasionally pink, red, or black.- combat;
Mishka's attire for fighting differs only slightly from her laid-back style. A muted pink and white cheongsam adorns her lithe frame, the split skirt reaching her knees. She wears white arm guards and matching shin guards. Standard shinobi shoes, colored dull pink, cover her feet. She wears a pair of white booty shorts beneath the dress, and often wears a simple pink choker around her neck. On each hip is a dull pink case that holds her common weapons and other miscellaneous items. She also has a curved kunai holster strapped to her right thigh, and her tanto on the left.
→ identifiers |
- wings;
Mishka has two scars on her back--they take the appearance of roughly-carved wings that start at her shoulder blades and span the length of her back. Mishka absolutely hates these scars due to their origin but usually won't go out of her way to hide them. She considers them a part of her, just as she would her beautiful hair. If asked about them she'll either ignore the question or lie--they are a reminder of her deepest pain and sorrow, and speaking about them upsets her.
→ inventory |
- Kaze, her tanto, which possesses a black handle with an inlaid pink crystal just below the blade.
- 20 kunai
- 10 paper bombs
- 20 shuriken
- 80 senbon
- 5 smoke bombs
- 5 soldier pills
- 3 blood pills
- 1 summoning scroll w/ additional 50 senbon
- 2 basic medical kits
→ strengths |
- crystal release;
Mishka is incredibly proficient with it, to the extent that most would deem it mastery. She's more modest, however, and personally sticks to the claim that she's "just highly skilled" in the art. Mishka was taught Crystal Release by her mother, Aya, from a very early age. She was instructed seven days a week and most evenings, receiving constant training to better her skill. Her father had ordered this, having wanted to make sure his daughter was among the strongest kunoichi in the village. Mishka never got much sleep and was always worn down in the time she wasn't training. For an entire decade she lived this way; it was hellish but it granted her incredible skill.- evasion;
Mishka was taught taijutsu by her father when not learning outside of home. He realized during their sessions together that his daughter wasn't exactly a hard-hitter. So to better her defense he focused on upping her evasive skill. Mishka, in turn, became very adept at quick movements and impressive getaways. Her light stature also makes it easier for her to dodge strikes and rapidly distance herself from sweeping or wide-ranging attacks.- kindness;
Mishka can be just about the sweetest young woman you'd ever want to meet. She is patient and can be very loving to the right person. Mishka isn't quick to trust people but when she has faith in someone she's a reliable friend and ally. She only really shows this sweeter, kinder side to the people she truly cares about (which number few). For someone she does care for, she'll do anything she can to aid him/her regardless of any suffering or inconvenience on her part.- fiery fighting;
Though one might not know it from her looks, Mishka is actually a very skilled kunoichi. Utilizing her crystal release, she can be a fierce opponent that's difficult to subdue. She can create and manipulate crystal easily and quickly, using offense and defense simultaneously to keep her enemies on their toes. Though Mishka is generally warm-hearted and reserved outside of battle, she is an aggressive fighter and will expend all her energy to win if it means survival.- high tier maiden;
When around other people (such as within villages or traveled roads), Mishka carries herself with an air of refinement. She isn't snooty or arrogant by any means, but her very aura conveys that she is of a subtle, polite manner. This behavior allows her to blend into high society despite not being part of it. Wearing the right dress to accentuate her beauty, Mishka can easily walk into any formal event or gathering and not receive any questioning glances as to whether or not she belongs there.- needle specialist;
On par with her mastery in the crystal release is her ability to throw needles, typically senbon, with great accuracy. Mishka was trained in this skill by her friend Reka. Reka, being a medic, taught her the basics of anatomy and passed down her own knowledge in precision with inflicting strategic injury during combat. Mishka trained for 2 years in this skill alone, devoting much of her time to it, especially when Reka was available to guide her. Using needles of any kind (crystal or standard senbon are her preferred) Mishka can, among other things, temporarily paralyze certain areas of her enemy's body. This method of stunning nerves may not be as long-lasting as the techniques known to actual medics, but it is fast and efficient in slowing down targets.- genjutsu;
Mishka's tertiary specialty is illusion-crafting. She spent a solid two years training with Eito, learning to cancel and create genjutsu of a most impressive caliber. The illusions she creates herself are typically nature-oriented, involving birds, dogs, plants, etc. Mishka takes pride in the beauty of her illusions and can make someone feel completely tranquil just by the level of intensity she's able to create.
→ weaknesses |
- navigation;
Mishka, despite her extensive time traveling, is fairly poor when it comes to trying to find her way around, especially in new places. As a child she got lost every so often in her own neighborhood, so new places are a nightmare for her. Sometimes she will stumble upon new villages or towns simply because she took a wrong turn, not because she actually meant to wind up there. When on missions with her squads in her younger years, Mishka was never trusted with the map.- superiors;
Due to her overbearing father and unfortunate romantic history, Mishka has developed a peculiar subservient behavior towards those she considers above her. If she has an established connection or relationship to such a person, she often puts that person's wishes above her own. This can be bothersome during missions, as her personal loyalty and morals may harshly conflict with her physical actions or decisions. Aside from a couple men in her past, however, Mishka hasn't found anyone particularly powerful worthy of swaying her.- pain;
Though her past was riddled with suffering, Mishka still can't handle physical pain any better than the average person. Her nerves will endure suffering from receiving attacks, but due to the association her brain makes with the trauma she went through, her body's reaction is to submit--this makes her feel drained during a fight much faster than it would for anyone else--but only if her pain is great enough.- alcohol;
Mishka cannot hold her liquor. At all. During undercover missions she would often have to refrain from drinking with the crowd or dilute her glass with water. This sometimes made her stand out, making others suspicious, though it never resulted in a failed mission. Mishka prefers not to drink for any reason, as once even the smallest glass of alcohol enters her system she becomes oddly quiet, morbid, and dark. Her father has speculated that it is due to some repressed second personality, but Mishka passionately denies this.- taijutsu;
Mishka has average physical strength and not very impressive skill in hand-to-hand fighting. She can dish out punches and kicks, but they're in no way reinforced with chakra or a background in physical strength training. Her muscles are conditioned for regular use in battle but if her opponent expects a hard hit he's not going to get one. Mishka focused all her time on ninjutsu and genjutsu--as far as taijutsu goes, her ability is no better than the average chunin.- torture;
Specifically, witnessing the torture of others close to her or those she cares about. Seeing this disturbs her on a deep level, reminding her of her imprisonment and the murder of her beloved, Kai. Any extreme torture inflicted upon her would likely be reminiscent of her time with Yori. In such situations her alternate "personality" as her father called it may emerge--the part of her that's dark, apathetic, and morbid. She doesn't fight like her usual self when she's in such a wrecked emotional state.- driven by power;
Mishka's ultimate goal is to achieve as much power as she can. She wants to be the very best kunoichi possible to make her parents--her father in particular--proud. She values strength both on and off the battlefield, though she is lacking physically in the former and emotionally in the latter. Her passion for power makes her disadvantaged if around others with power, as the envy factor there may very well sway her decisions. Her weakness in dealing with superiors plays into this to a good extent, even to the point of side-stepping her morals, if the conditions are right.
→ personality | Mishka is a relatively cheerful, understanding woman. She will offer a courteous smile to passersby on the roads as she travels, and would help another if they really needed it, even if she did not know them well on a personal level. She strives to be kind to everyone on the basis of wanting to be polite and making a good impression. When she gets to know someone Mishka strives to relate to him/her on a deep level, wanting to form the kind of important bond that her sensei Eito encouraged her to cherish.
Mishka is sweet and loyal to those she loves. She will gladly go out of her way to aid a friend even if it isn't at the best time for her. She loves spending time with friends and family and will accept any opportunity to further cement her friendship with someone. She is patient with others and tolerant to a great extent, though under extreme circumstances she loses her bright smile and will trade it for a more solemn countenance.
In battle Mishka is aggressive and strong, which contrasts with her personality outside of a fight. Her combat-based persona is her more confident side. She dislikes death but will kill if she must. If provoked enough during any encounter, she has the chance of shifting moods. Her second persona, which has rarely ever shown itself, is that of a quiet, dark young woman. This second personality is unknown in its origin, but it never really appears so it's never a problem for her.
Overall Mishka is very much like an angel--she's patient, helpful, and sweet. She'll stay by her ill friend's bedside for however long it takes them to recover; she'll protect her allies with all she has, even if pains her greatly; and she'll always have an ear to spare if someone's in need of advice or just company. In fact if she hadn't built up her strong background as a skilled kunoichi, Mishka might've made a great counselor or teacher in her civilian life.

→ likes | Sunny days, animals (especially dogs and birds), pretty genjutsu, flowers, the color pink, receiving smiles back from strangers on the road, having a cozy place to crash at the end of the day, ambling through windy fields, tranquil places, nice scenery, casual conversation, men, wearing dresses, maintaining her hair, getting dressed up, going someplace new, and finding her way back to the main roads whenever she gets lost.
→ dislikes | The color blue, feeling alone or helpless, seeing others in pain, cloudy days, when her hair's messed up, not being able to find her way back to town when she needs to, getting snuck up on, excessive rude behavior, witnessing lack of respect towards superiors, and being unable to meet the desires of those above her.
→ romantic history |
Kai Ishida
Her first romantic relationship. She met him shortly after becoming a jonin, and the two dated for seven months. During their 8th month Kai was killed by Yori Shishio, the underground trafficking ringleader who had been posing as Kawagakure's Lord. Mishka's memories of the man are bittersweet, and even now she'll get upset or teary-eyed if she lets herself think about him too much.
Reka Oreshi
Her second romantic encounter. This was a light, fluffy kind of romance formed when Reka trained Mishka in her needle specialty. Though Mishka never outright admitted anything to anyone one way or the other, the truth was that the two dabbled in romance a bit during their two years training. The years following that time allowed the cute fluff to fizzle out. By the time Mishka made the decision to leave the village, the two were already back to friend status. Just, really close friends.
→ ideal partner | Mishka's ideal partner would be powerful, confident, and mysterious. He'd have to be a relatively decent guy, at least toward her. Mishka isn't that picky when it comes to romance, and it may be noted that her sex drive rarely factors into her relationship decisions.
→ habits | Fiddling with her fingers when she's nervous, gazing at something too long and losing focus on the conversation, and playing with the choker around her neck if she's upset or scared.
→ fears | Torture, Yori, seeing her loved ones hurt or seeing them die, getting lost to the point of no return, never dating again, being alone, not being able to defend herself properly, prisons, and bondage.
→ dreams | To become as powerful as she can and to make her parents proud.
→ nightmares | Not being able to achieve her dream, or anything involving Yori, who she considers her absolute worst enemy.

→ gear | Mishka carries typical basic weapons and her tanto, Kaze. She carries senbon in abundance because of her proficiency with them.
→ fighting style | Mishka can fight both long and close range. She's at her best somewhere in the middle, but being elsewhere doesn't disadvantage her. She typically will defend more than attack, using her crystal release to deflect or halt her enemy's strikes. She attacks aggressively and isn't afraid to do serious damage when she deems it necessary. Her evasion is top-notch due to her father's intense training. Her offensive taijutsu is only average, however.
→ elemental nature | Crystal Release, (earth x unknown)
→ chakra control level | Due to her mother's harsh training regimen, Mishka learned quickly how important chakra control was. She focused on this and sought passionately to use her abilities the best she could. After many years spent honing her crystal release and practicing genjutsu from Eito, Mishka's chakra control is near perfect. She has slightly greater skill in chakra efficiency--long battles revolving around ninjutsu do little to tire her. Through her strict chakra training she was eventually able to open a few chakra gates, giving herself added speed and power in battle. She can open up to the 4th. The gates beyond that one were too much for her physically. It had taken her several weeks to recover from the muscle damage caused when she had tried to go past that limit.

Aya Ishitake was a loyal special jonin to Kumogakure. She had been serving the village nearly all her life, and was well known by most as possibly one of the most talented crystal release users throughout the lands. It was during a routine day running errands that she laid eyes on Tsubaki Ayakana. Tsubaki had been away on a year-long assignment of the utmost secrecy, and Aya managed to get a glimpse of the man as he strode in through the village gate. It was love at first sight.
Tsubaki ended up meeting Aya a week later when she was getting an assignment from within the main administrative building. He was instantly drawn in by her beauty. He asked her out and a few days later they were an adorable couple. The two began going out on missions together, lending one another support for especially dangerous trips. Tsubaki was of the cold, quiet sort, but Aya's cheerful and outgoing demeanor made up for his lack of social grace.
Less than a year later they were married. At 22 Aya Ayakana brought a lovely daughter into the world, who she and Tsubaki named Mishka.
Mishka was a relatively calm little girl. She was taught by her mother to be polite and respectful. Her father was generally dismissive towards his daughter despite prodding from Aya to be more involved. Mishka, to her mother's delight, excelled in studies from an early age. At age five, Mishka, able to speak relatively well even though she was so young, happened upon her mother training out in the yard. Aya's pink crystals were entrancing to Mishka. She approached her mother and tugged on her sleeve that afternoon, a curious light in her eyes."Mom, can you teach me that? It's pretty."
Aya, thrilled with her daughter's interest in the crystal release, immediately began explaining to the young girl the concept of chakra and jutsu. Mishka was like a sponge, taking in the information with great focus. She rarely spoke; she only listened, learning all she could even though she still wasn't skilled enough to use the release herself. Instead, Aya began lessons each day to teach the girl how to summon her chakra and use it.
Her initial efforts weren't always successful, but with Aya's encouragement she eventually got the hang of it, understanding what it felt like to focus that energy prior to use. Tsubaki would sometimes intervene during Aya's instruction, reminding the girl that her success as a future kunoichi depended on her ability to manipulate chakra with power and efficiency. Given that her father didn't ordinarily speak to her, Mishka saw this as positive reinforcement and was all the more motivated to make her parents proud. Three years of home training passed. Mishka's chakra control was well above average as a result of this, though her social skills were lacking horribly because she never strayed from home to go out and meet other children in the neighborhood.
At age eight Mishka enrolled in the academy. She excelled in study of most areas, especially that of chakra control, history of shinobi arts, and the concept behind basic techniques--including origin and execution. She impressed her teachers with her knowledge but was lacking in a very crucial area: geography. Mishka was able to memorize the details for techniques but she couldn't do much when staring at a map. She usually failed her harder tests involving distances, the locations of cities and towns, and layouts of typical strongholds, and the patterns of infrastructure. Navigation was something she struggled with, and it still is--very much so.
At age ten Mishka graduated. She hadn't really stepped out of her comfort zone yet, so she didn't really have any friends--just acquaintances. The chance for friendship came soon after for her, though, with the assignment of genin squads. Mishka was paired with a girl one year older than her, named Reka, and a boy her own age, Areshi. Squad 2's instructor was Eito Saketa, a jonin. Eito was a proficient genjutsu user, but he did well to teach his squad about proper training. He took them out on missions but noticed that Mishka showed symptoms of fatigue at nearly every training meeting. When he asked her about this, she informed him of her rigorous training at home.
Mishka's graduation from the academy had not stopped her parents from their intense instruction and training regimen. Mishka trained every day and most nights, always working to better herself when she wasn't doing assignments with her team. She showed great progress in her ability to utilize crystal release just like her mother. She was even able to use it during the missions she went on with her squad, which awed her teammates. Eito encouraged her to be more open with Reka and Areshi, wanting the girl to make some actual friends. Mishka politely veered from the topic, explaining that becoming powerful was what her parents wanted for her, what would make her father proud--and so that was also what she wanted."My goal is strength. I am on good terms with my teammates. That is all I require, for now."
"One day you'll require more. Good friends are part of being a fulfilled person and a strong protector of this village. You're polite but there is no depth in your relationships with them, your team."
"I suppose. I'll consider your words, sensei."
Mishka did just as she told the man. Even while training at home, when forming and reforming crystal was all she could consciously think about, she began wondering about how to make friends with her team. Areshi seemed pretty nice, so she wouldn't have much trouble, there. Reka was mysterious and often didn't say much, however, so chatting with her was intimidating. Mishka decided it logical to show them her willingness for friendship in battle. From that point on during training exercises and missions, Mishka went out of her way to defend and protect her team. She focused on defense, shielding them from enemy kunai, elemental strikes, and hard punches with the strength of her crystal. Her teammates realized her intentions and the three became fast friends. Areshi was their close-range fist-fighter, Reka was their long-range weapons specialist, and Mishka was the mid-range defender and supplementary attacker.
Eito watched his squad grow and was pleased to see how well their abilities worked together. When a year had passed and his team seemed ready, he began taking on higher-ranking missions. Mishka's constant training with her father and reinforcement with her mother prepared her for this heightened skill requirement. She supported her team in every assignment despite her own fatigue from training, and though her body never really bulked up enough to handle taijutsu, her ninjutsu was more than enough to aid her and her team. The three grew close and formed a bond of trust. On a few occasions Mishka even had her team over for lunch at her home. Tsubaki wasn't fond of this but he allowed it. Aya was ecstatic that her daughter, previously having been a lone wolf, was finally making friends. And good ones, too.
Four years passed. Mishka's hellish training at home slowed to a stop. Her mother would teach her new techniques if asked, but Aya wished to resume her work doing missions with Tsubaki. Tsubaki had done his share of training Mishka through the years. He'd focused almost entirely on the girl's speed and evasion. He was somewhat at a loss that his daughter only had average physical strength and taijutsu ability even though he himself was so skilled in these areas. In a sense, he'd been a bit bitter that Mishka had taken to following in the footsteps of her mother rather than her father. Still, he did care about her success and allowed her to train elsewhere as a reward for having done so well under the decade of guidance from her parents.
With much more free time, the 15-year-old Mishka, already very well versed in crystal release, chose to study a different art to add to her repertoire: genjutsu. She already had incredible chakra control thanks to her mother's strict, time-consuming lessons, so learning illusions seemed useful. She proposed to Eito that he teach her what he knew about genjutsu, as he was well known for his expertise in the art. Eito agreed to teach her privately, on one condition."Show me what you've learned--the result of the past ten years.
If you can beat me, I'll teach you."
Mishka agreed to this and fought the man. It was an intense battle, the two going at one another as if aiming for a lethal victory. Eito was taken aback by the girl's power over her crystal release, feeling a bit in awe over just how much strength and precision she commanded with it. The fact that the 15-year-old girl was keeping pace with his 23-year-old self was impressive. Though she'd put up a spectacular fight, Eito eventually overpowered her using physical force. Mishka wasn't strong enough to counter his strikes, and when he was finally able to catch up to her speedy movements, he halted her dodge with a hard kick to her side. As she collided with a tree he went in to subdue her movement, but when he got within inches he realized she wasn't as beaten as he'd thought. Behind him were fifty spikes of crystal, hovering, waiting to drive into him from all angles. Mishka looked up and coughed a bit, reeling from the blow."Finish me if you wish. But I wonder...
if both of us are beaten, will I still satisfy that condition?"
Eito smirked. He took a step forward, logic telling him that she was just trying to sneak her way out of losing completely and hurting her pride, and she wasn't about to drive her own spikes into her to make a point. They were too close, now--it was risky, though more so for him.
He took one more step and Mishka took in a quick breath. A second later Eito felt the pain of the crystal spike as it went straight through his right shoulder and into Mishka's left. She hissed loudly and smiled."Guess we're both not going anywhere, huh?"
Eito, seeing how serious she was to win his approval, nodded and let a chuckle escape him through the pain. He then agreed to teach her what he knew of genjutsu. For two years she trained privately with the man, soaking in the new information in much the same way she had done when her mother began teaching her the basics of chakra control and crystal manipulation. He trained her every day, though not to the harsh extent the girl's parents had. In time Mishka develop great skill in the art. With Eito's guidance she learned how to cancel illusions well and perform them even better. She studied the details with the utmost care, as attention to detail was what made genjutsu all the more realistic.
In their two years together Mishka grew closer to her sensei, opening up to him about how overbearing and demanding her father was, and how, in contrast, how sweet and kind her mother was. She talked often about her desire to become strong. It was in her nature to want to please those who had done their best to teach her so much, and Mishka admitted to Eito amidst their training one Tuesday morning that she hoped she'd one day impress him, too, and make him proud to have been her teacher. She also thanked him for his words years back."That depth you spoke of. I've attained it with them, my teammates, my friends. I will...strive to do the same for others. It really is nice, to have these connections, just as you said."
Eito received her words with a grateful smile and gave her an encouraging pat on the shoulder. They resumed training, Mishka starting a new chapter of sorts in her life. She honed her genjutsu with a passionate drive for success. She became more than adept at the art, able to, at the end of those two years, create stunning illusions that could either be realistic or mind-bending.
Though her instruction from the genjutsu specialist aided her greatly, Mishka's primary skill was still crystal. She decided at the age of 17 to enter the Chunin Exams. She passed easily as a result of over-training herself. The other genin were strong, but Mishka was, due to her time spent training, older than the others. Compared to most of the participants she was late in taking the exam, but this didn't bother her. With her new rank of chunin she took on a slew of new and exciting missions. Reka, unfortunately, did not join her, as she was training at the hospital to become a medic. Areshi had gone off with a different squad, aspiring to be part of the ANBU. Though there was a distance between them, Squad 2 remained on friendly terms and sometimes met up for dinner at one of the local restaurants in Kumo.
For another year Mishka trained, though she focused much of her time on missions. With all the interaction she was getting with other people and villages, she heightened her abilities and gained considerable more respect toward and patience with others. She met many interesting people, many of whom were men. Mishka sometimes wondered what it'd be like to settle down with someone nice and have a family, but it was in no way a desire. She wanted power to make her parents happy. They were strong protectors of her village, relied upon and trusted. That was her goal, to earn what they possessed. Mishka would accept nothing short of that at the very least.
Around her 18th birthday, Mishka was promoted to jonin. This was an eventful day for her. She had earned a new title and a whole new level of respect from her peers. The other jonin in the administrative building smiled at her often as they passed by in the halls. It felt amazing to be acknowledged.
One man in particular acknowledged more than just her strength and rank. He approached her one afternoon in spring and identified himself as Kai Ishida. He proceeded to ask her out on a date, being sure to mention that she was just about the most beautiful young lady he'd ever laid eyes on. Mishka replied with a smile, remembering the stories her mother had told her about how she and Tsubaki had gotten started together. Mishka agreed to Kai's proposal and the two began dating. They were a lovely couple, just as her parents had been. Mishka spent seven months with Kai, sometimes going on assignments with him. Towards the end of fall, however, she was summoned to the administrative building to receive a particularly dangerous assignment.
Mishka had completed a handful of S-rank missions before, but this one was possibly the most difficult. She was to travel to Kawagakure, the village hidden in the stream. It was a small village, though relative to the major nations it was the size of a massive town. It was known for having a drug-trafficking problem, and more recently there was a rising issue with human-trafficking, as well. The higher-ups assigned Mishka the task of finding the leader of the underground in this village and taking him out. In order to accomplish this, she would need to get close to the Lord, who was believed to be pulling the strings. Corrupt officials really weren't anything new, so Mishka accepted the assignment. The authorities in Kumo who assigned it to her suggested that she take backup--undercover, of course. Kai volunteered without hesitation, wanting to be there for her during something so risky."I'd be an idiot to let you march off and do this alone."
Mishka initially refused. She didn't want her loving boyfriend to get injured if she screwed up. But Kai reasoned that if Mishka was somehow injured, he'd be the one feeling like he screwed up for not having accompanied her. After much pleading, Kai was allowed to go. Mishka was outwardly concerned about the arrangement but deep down she was happy. For something so important she was going to have her trusted friend and future lover by her side. Kai was devoted to her in every aspect--he'd even, in the past, turned down a few important missions just to spend the afternoon alone with her, or to spend an evening watching stars and chatting. Mishka had maintained a relatively innocent persona. She wasn't experienced sexually but that didn't matter to Kai--he respected her patience and her desire for preparedness, and her inexperience made her kinda cute. Not that she wasn't, already.
Three weeks later Mishka made the trip to Kawagakure. It took a while getting there, but having Kai for company most of the way was comforting. Once they got close they went their separate ways. Kai would be handling surveillance from a distance, keeping his eye out and watching for danger. Mishka would be locating and questioning the Lord. She knew this would probably mean entertaining him a bit, giving a good show and all that. She'd brought her cutest dress for this purpose--a short, sleek red number with her usual split skirt and sleeveless style. She dolled up just outside the village and strode in, looking perfectly natural, like she were some high-society woman. It was thanks to her mother that she exuded such grace. All that time training was paying off.
Mishka made it to the administrative building and easily made an appointment with the Lord. The fact she didn't look like a kunoichi helped her ease her way past the guards with very few words exchanged. And once the Lord saw her, his reaction made Mishka think that perhaps the mission really wouldn't be so difficult.
"An angel in my office? What can I do for you, miss...?"
"Renoue Kiyoko, my Lord. I am here on important business."
"Oh?"
"Allow me the honor of your company and we can discuss it."
The Lord chuckled and heard the woman out. Mishka was careful to include specific details from the briefing she'd received and the few files she'd glanced over during the trip. She didn't have much to go off of, but the man behind the desk seemingly took her high-society charm as genuine and offered his name: Matsuhi.
Matsuhi invited his lovely guest to dinner that evening, wanting to cater to her desire to involve herself in the underground. He waved her away a few minutes later, and Mishka exited the building with a heavy feeling of dread in her chest. Something didn't seem right. She'd gotten into his office perfectly fine, with no suspicion--and why would there have been, with her extensive courtesy training?
No, that dread stemmed from how easy it had been getting the Lord to induct her into the trafficking business. He was willing to share with her information that upheld the financial stability of his dark dealings...because he found her attractive? Mishka was smarter than that.
She informed Kai that something was amiss and instructed he stay on high alert. Kai did so but couldn't help sneaking a kiss before they went their separate ways in the street. Neither, at the time, had sensed their audience.
Later that day Mishka traveled once again to Matsuhi's office. She was mildly worried when Kai failed to meet with her prior to her entering the building, but she let it go. His job was surveillance, watching her back--he was most likely out of sight, doing exactly that. She smiled to herself as she was greeted outside the office by a random associate of Matsuhi's. Like a true lady she bowed slightly and entered, ready to observe and memorize every word so she could report back to Kumo with the utmost haste.
The meeting was between herself, the Lord, and five other men. Most of them looked shady, though a few looked normal. This made her a bit uneasy--if these guys did such horrible things and still gave off the aura of typical shinobi...were there men in the shadows of Kumo, as well? Mishka forced back the very idea and focused her attention on the others. There were indeed some awful things being planned, though Mishka hadn't really realized how bad until the question was asked of her: "If you cannot aid us in making these deals, are you prepared to offer yourself as collateral?"
Mishka hesitated, a bit surprised by the blunt inquiry. She opened her mouth to speak but felt a hand on her back. Matsuhi snaked an arm around her waist and pulled the woman closer, eyeing the others as he spoke."Leave Kiyoko to me. She's my guest. If she doesn't follow our rules, I'll be the one to handle it, gentlemen."
Mishka's stomach turned over at this statement. She worried for herself if she messed up in any way. Her job was to gather intelligence and hopefully bring an end to the primary trafficking in the village, but she couldn't do that if she was dead. She'd have to play it safe.
Mishka nodded and looked the men in the eyes. "I'm only in this for the money. Cut me my fair share for doing the leg work and I won't disappoint."
The men smirked and seemed to accept this answer, though Matsuhi was less expressive. He then announced that drinks were to be had in honor of their newest business partner. Mishka attended this event, following the men to the nearest bar with all senses on alert.
Only an hour into the evening she realized that she'd accepted one too many cups of sake. Her world went black. The last thing she saw was the face of an apathetic Matsuhi as he stood from his chair, saying something about taking care of a loose end.
Mishka woke to find herself in a dark cell, chained to the wall by a cuff on her left wrist. It was a prison cell. They'd placed her in Kawagakure's prison? That didn't make any sense. She looked around, her world spinning a bit. Outside of her cell was a concrete hall lit dimly by a hanging light. Across that walkway was another cell. In that cell was a body suspended by the wrists. She heard a dripping sound coming from that cell. She peered closer. Blood. The man across from her looked half dead.
With creepy timing her captor entered the room, shutting and locking the thick metal door behind him. It was Matsuhi. He approached Mishka's cell and explained that he'd drugged her. It had only helped him that she seemed to have no tolerance for alcohol, as it had made the powder he'd slipped into her drink all the more potent. The man demanded her real name. Mishka, realizing she'd been found out, denied him this. Instead, she asked how he'd found out about her.
Matsuhi explained to her that he kept his villagers in the dark about the underground. Logically, that meant that almost no civilians were aware of its presence, and the ones that did knew better than to confront the leader about it. Especially women--they were sought after in the market, and so the smart ones that knew about the underground either stayed quiet or wound up dead. "Miyoko" had chosen to inquire about it, so it had tipped him off that she was either undeniably stupid, or most likely a foreigner. His suspicions were confirmed when he saw the woman kiss Kai in the street."As punishment for trying to deceive me and impede my business, I had planned to sell you on the very market you were trying to infiltrate. But that didn't suit you. I wanted you for myself."
"Release me or I WILL kill you."
"Tsk. You won't resist me. Care to see why?"
Matsuhi smirked and stepped closer to her cell, standing in the light. His appearance suddenly changed. He was a different man--one with lengthy black hair and piercing blue eyes. He wore all black--much like an assassin. He smiled, showing a wolfish grin. When his captured angel failed to give a response, he stepped aside and pulled a switch above him. Another light came on, across the walkway in the other cell, illuminating the one inside it."Oh my god. You... Kai...?"
"He's not dead. Yet. Be a good girl and tell me your name. He doesn't have to die."
Mishka gave him her name eagerly. Seeing her love's bloodied and battered state was enough to bring tears to her eyes. The man outside her cell tapped his chin thoughtfully at her cooperation."Mishka? I like that name. But I won't be calling you by it. You'll be my angel. Caged and beautiful. Be good and I promise you he won't suffer."
"You've already made him suffer."
Kai woke at this moment and raised his head. He spotted Mishka across from him, glanced at the long-haired man, and immediately summed up the situation in his head."Don't tell him anything, no matter what."
Mishka nodded, trusting the word of her love over that of the psychopath before her. The Lord sighed and explained to her calmly that he was not who she thought he was. The real Lord of Kawagakure had been killed--by he himself. His real name was Yori Shishio, and he had been running the underground in the village for a good five years and counting, simultaneously playing the role of Lord. His level of intelligence and degree of skill in gathering intel surprised Mishka--she had not expected to be discovered, given her successful background in high-priority missions and other risky assignments.
But this man outsmarted her. He'd seen her coming and had prepared well. He had even been horrible enough to beat up her teammate as insurance.
Mishka tried to escape, aiming to destroy her cell with her crystal release. No sooner had she raised her arm when Yori entered Kai's cell. He drew a tanto from behind him and stabbed her love straight through the shoulder. She heard the blade cut into his collarbone as it buried itself in his body. Kai restrained from a scream but his quiet growls of pain broke her heart."An escape attempt already? I told you to be good, didn't I?"
"What the fuck do you want?!" she screamed.
"You."
"Let HIM go, then! He hasn't done anything to deserve this!"
"Oh on the contrary, darling. Before my men managed to subdue him, your partner in crime here killed about seven of them singlehandedly. Discipline...is necessary."
This was the last thing he said for remainder of the night. Yori continued his torture of Kai, assaulting him with every weapon in his arsenal. It started out small--stabs, cuts, gashes that soaked his clothes in blood. The pool of crimson below Kai's body slowly grew. A while passed and his punishments got more intense. Deeper wounds--jagged swords forced into non-lethal areas, poison poured directly into these open cuts, the holes in his flesh burning like white fire. Kai's screams were seemingly absorbed by the thick concrete walls, but they echoed in Mishka's mind, tormenting her beyond description.
She screamed for Yori to stop, to show mercy, to spare her teammate the pain of the torture. She screamed and pleaded until her throat was raw. She kept hoping that someone would hear, that someone would break into the room and help her. In the back of her mind, though, she knew this wasn't likely.
By the end of the night Yori had shown his truly sadistic side. He'd taken Kai's left hand off with his katana and had carved out the man's right eye with a kunai. Yori, possessing some amount of medical knowledge, would patch up the more serious wounds just so that they wouldn't kill the man--then he'd continue his work.
Mishka's screams faded into silent, strained whispers of heartbreak, fear, and helplessness. She could only watch as her love was disfigured, dismembered, and healed just enough so that the same pain could be inflicted over and over again on the remaining parts of his body. Kai's cries of agony never ceased. His torture lasted many hours, though to Mishka it felt like days.
At the end of his little session Yori stepped out of the cell and locked the door. He approached his angel, who was slumped over on the cold floor, leaning against the wall. She was still wide awake, her eyes red from crying. She stared up at him with hate but refused to speak, not wanting to make things for Kai any worse. Satisfied for the time being, Yori left her alone. He didn't come back for three days.
The first day without him was a blessing. Mishka was grateful he did not come back in to hurt her love again. Throughout the day she called out to Kai, asking how he was doing. He'd moan back a strangled reply, sounding like something between "peachy" and "fucking awesome."
Mishka attempted numerous times to break out of her cell. Her crystal release was strong enough to encase and shatter metal ordinarily, but the bars on her cell were protected by some kind of seal or technique. Whatever it was, it made her crystals fly back at her when she formed them, and any that touched the bars shattered instantly, leaving sparks of electricity in their exit.
The second day was getting better. Mishka, though tired, hungry, and very thirsty, had regained her voice and spoke to Kai often, encouraging him to do his best to stay conscious. Kai obeyed. He would sometimes laugh at the jokes she made, but there was no mistaking it--he was going to die from his injuries. The pool of blood below him grew steadily as each day passed, and though his physical pain had quieted to a bearable roar, Kai's greatest suffering came from knowing he couldn't save his girlfriend.
On the third day, Kai knew his time was short. He used his remaining strength to speak to Mishka, and to console her, though his latter effort wasn't very successful. The two talked all day, though Mishka did a lot of the listening. She tried her best to keep her loving gaze on the man, but it was hard to do--his missing eye and the brutality of Yori's treatment made looking at him...painful.
Kai's last words brought tears to his eyes as well as Mishka's. His breathing was ragged, his lungs stinging from the poison in his system. He offered her a final smile and gazed at her kindly with his remaining eye."When you get out of here, never stop smiling. I've always loved your smile. ...I love you, Mishka."
Mishka watched in horror as the man's body went limp. There was a small jerk in his restraints as the full weight of his body hung solely on gravity, Kai no longer offering any resistance to his suspension.
Mishka cried until she had no tears left.
The next morning Yori returned. He left Kai's corpse as it was and entered Mishka's cell, looking almost chipper as he approached the woman sitting in the corner. Mishka drew back and away from him and instantly tried to strike him using her crystals. Yori expected this, though, and he dodged her attack, though it was, in truth, a lucky dodge. Her speed was great, he knew, but his power trumped that. There was also the fact her reflexes and chakra weren't at their normal levels--the woman had not eaten, slept, or drank for 3 straight days. Her body was exhausted and running on empty.
He instructed her to stand. Mishka didn't reply at first--she looked as dead on the outside as she felt on the inside. Her heart had been torn in two as she'd watched her beloved die a horrible death right before her eyes. And she'd been powerless to stop it.
Her gaze flicked up for only a second and she tried to use her crystals again, but this time the man jumped upwards and landed directly in front of her, surprising the woman. He grabbed her by the forearm and dragged her up, then threw her sideways. Mishka collided with the bars of her cell and instantly grabbed them for support, trying not to fall. She was weak, so holding on to something was the only way she could stay standing. She felt a presence behind her and then felt a kunai at her neck. Yori asked her a question but it all sounded like fuzzy, far-away words to Mishka. She was too lost in her sorrow and pain to really care about the present situation.
Not liking her ignorant behavior, her captor threw her down and proceeded to undress her. Mishka didn't face him--she only turned her head and stared across the walkway. Only when she felt a sudden pain did she glance back at the man now on top of her. Her mind blurred this from her conscious thought. She drifted again, staring at the corpse of her love as her innocence was violently stripped from her. When Yori seemed content he dragged her back up to her feet once more. Mishka braced herself against the bars, and felt stabbing, fiery pain in her upper back.
The man was carving something into her flesh with his kunai. Mishka's senses returned with this sudden blast of pain, and she finally cried out. She tried to move away and resist, but Yori outweighed her by sheer muscle mass alone. She screamed and cried for an agonizing twenty minutes, pinned between the metal bars and her sadistic rapist. When he moved away from her she collapsed. He produced a small mirror from his pocket and held it up, instructing her to look."I've given you wings, my angel," he purred.
Mishka saw in the reflection two shapes on her back. It was hard to tell due to all the blood, but it appeared as through she had two wings cruelly marked into her flesh. When Mishka saw this, she didn't bother trying to strike him again. All she could do was cry as the full extent of what had just happened finally hit her. Tears streamed down her face, fueled by pain, sadness, and shame. Mostly the latter.
Yori kept his beautiful caged angel in captivity for three weeks. During this time he tortured and assaulted her numerous times, and never once did he remove Kai's corpse from the opposite cell. Mishka was consumed by the scent of death and suffered immense trauma from her captor's treatment. It didn't take long for her body to lose its will--she eventually stopped fighting and took Yori's punishments. Her body was just too tired and hurt to resist.
At the three week mark the higher-ups of Kumo, extremely concerned by the lack of communication with Mishka, sent a squad of their best jonin out to Kawagakure to see what had happened. After raiding several administrative buildings and demanding information from the local shinobi, the squad was eventually led to the prison hidden underground within the village. The jonin discovered Mishka in her cell. Her captor was no where to be found.
The angel was escorted back to Kumo to receive medical treatment. Mishka was in the hospital for 6 weeks. Her primary medic was Reka, her old teammate from Squad 2. Mishka was initially quiet and very distant when she was brought home, not wanting to speak with anyone. Reka began speaking with her like old times, though, and by the second week of her stay in the hospital Mishka was talking again. She usually listened to Reka, not saying much, herself, but she was healing. This was a slow process, but it allowed the two to bond. By the sixth week Mishka was almost fully healed. She was cleared to leave the hospital, but Reka caught her before she had left her room. She had a proposal.
Wanting to help her friend get back on her feet after her horrendous ordeal, Reka offered to teach her what she knew about projectiles. Reka had been their squad's weapons specialist, training with long-range fighting. Though she'd since given up on this focus and traded it for medical ninjutsu, she'd retained a good deal of her skill and wanted to pass it on to Mishka."The fray will help you move on, you know? And who
better to use as a training partner than a medic?"
Mishka agreed. The two women trained for 2 years together. Reka taught her the very basics of anatomy, instructing Mishka on where exactly to strike with a needle to do the most nerve damage. Mishka picked this up quickly, but it took her a great while to master the precision needed. Many times Reka acted as a moving target. Because she was able to heal herself, she allowed Mishka to strike her and would explain what effect it was having on her body. Mishka gained such proficiency from this training that she developed the ability to both pain her opponents and to paralyze them. Using her chakra she was able to enforce the needles further, using either standard metal senbon or her own crystal release. Mishka's time with Reka got her back to her old self, bringing out in her the kindness she once displayed.
She and Reka became very close, and some of Mishka's jonin acquaintances actually had to wonder if there was more going on between the two women besides friendship. Mishka never confirmed or denied anything. She kept to herself--polite to everyone, but generally less open with her emotions.
On occasion Reka would allow Mishka to test her genjutsu on her. This practice allowed the angel to put the finishing touches on several of her techniques. Three years later, however, Mishka decided she wanted a change of scenery. She went to the Raikage's office and asked permission to leave the village for an undetermined amount of time. The Raikage gave her the green light on this, knowing how loyal she was to Kumo.
And so Mishka left the Cloud. She wanders now, traveling to different villages and lands. Deep down she still finds a degree of disturbance in what she had gone through. Yori Shishio remains in a dark corner of her mind. Mishka sometimes wonders why. Why was he so cruel as to torture her without asking anything from her? Why had he targeted her specifically? And why had he let her live even though she knew his identity?
It was reported during her travels that after what had happened in Kawagakure, Yori stepped down from the position of Lord and vanished from the grid. Thanks to Mishka's detailed report Kumo had a criminal file on the man, but Mishka knew this wouldn't do much to subdue him. Still, she resumes her life as she once did in honor of Kai. She smiles freely and gives her care to those she trusts. Mishka constantly travels and can be found in nearly any location because, just like back in her genin days, she is still useless in proper navigation. She doesn't mind this too much, though--Mishka can find beauty in just about any place, during any season.<3
